Starting final layout............. from Exuberant Color

The final layout has started with the African and batik blocks.  I have to build it sideways on the design wall because it won't fit the other way. This is one each of the 16 patch blocks; a duplicate of all but 2 are in the next group to put up on the design wall.  I have 88 blocks total to work with and will only need 80 so I can eliminate anything I really don't like.  I'm putting 2 of the alternate large print batik squares in each column (which will be cross rows when sewn ...

3 binding options............... from Exuberant Color

The search was on.  I knew there some fairly solid looking dotty fabrics from the very early designs by Kaffe, you know, the ones selling for $60 or more a yard to people who didn't know who Kaffe was until a few years ago and are beefing up their collection.

This purple background dotty has colors that are in the stripes and shot cottons.

This blue one is even more solid looking with dots that don't have a high contrast.  It is called Freckles.

This red one is also called Freckles and I have the least amount of ...

15 more blocks............... from Exuberant Color

There is nothing too exciting to look at from yesterday.  I sewed 15 more of the duplicate blocks for the African and mottled batik 16 patch quilt.

Outside: I mowed the grass.  We had rain on 4 different days last week so the grass was wet most of the week and the grass was getting tall.  It took 58 minutes total, in 2 sessions so I didn't overheat.  The neighbor north mowed too and also the lady across the street.  Now the south neighbor better catch up with all of us.

Today I hope I can quilt the top ...

More blocks............. from Exuberant Color

More blocks, and even more blocks, for the African 16 patch quilt.  I had several other things to take care of yesterday so this is the only action that happened in the studio.

We had sunshine part of the day yesterday, more light rain for today.  I'm not complaining about the rain though, we still need more.  Maybe I can get some vacuuming done in the basement while it rains.

Auditioning the lime batik............. from Exuberant Color

I decided to cut one strip of the lime batik into squares to see if I was going to like it.  This is the first 34 of the 16 patch blocks.  The quilt will have 8 across and 10 down so this is just a sampling.  I like it so I will be cutting more of the squares and sewing the 34 duplicate 16 patch blocks.  Then I'll decide how many more blocks I need to piece.

We had several hours of light rain yesterday and got .35".  We're still at a deficit but I was happy we ...

Looking at seeds..................... from Exuberant Color

I'm going to have some out of town company later this week so my time is kind of scattered between chores and fun.  I vacuumed the main floor carpeting yesterday, baked some beer bread, mixed up some dough that needs to be chilled, and went through stacks of magazines.  I never made it to the ironing table.  Last night I just wanted to look at fun stuff so I pulled out these "seeds" for another project.

This photo is from April 2016 when I trimmed them all to whaterver maximum width I could.  This is all of the sizes ...

Flying Geese are sewn on............ from Exuberant Color

I finally took the pieces off the design wall and got it all sewn together.  The geese border fit perfectly with the half goose beginning the border both top and bottom.  I like it just as it is and could just quilt and bind it but it is only 40" x 56" so I need to keep adding to it.  It would only work as a wallhanging right now.

While the iron was hot I pressed the newest batch of strip piecing for the other African fabric quilt.  I got them all cut and sewed one of each combination.  Now ...

More parts................ from Exuberant Color

I worked on more parts for the 16 patch quilt.  These 5 strip sets will produce 10 blocks.  Now I have 16 strip sets to press and slice into block segments.  With all of the others I have already sewn this would give me a total of 68 blocks, enough for a 7 x 9 layout = 63 blocks or I can continue to add to it.  I will check to see if I have a large print that would look good cut into some alternate blocks.

I went through the 2" strips left from a previous quilt and found 5 ...

Lots of strip piecing....... from Exuberant Color

Lots of African fabric strips were cut yesterday and all but 4 were paired with mottled batiks.  I got 11 sets sewn last night.  That will make 22 blocks.

It's nice to be working on two quilts at the same time.  I can gaze up at the one on the design wall while sewing for the other quilt.

I decided to cut a Flying Geese block in half and put half onto one end of each of the borders.  I sewed them on and now need to sew on the 2 burgundy strips first, then the Flying Geese borders ...

Flying Geese borders............ from Exuberant Color

Last night I sewed the Flying Geese borders.  The pieced top is 40" and the Flying Geese borders are 39".  I have 3 solutions so far, a narrow spacer at each end, a spacer at just one end, or a partial Flying Geese block since I have a few of them left over and I could cut one in half and use half on each border.

I also made the 4 new 16 patch blocks with the African fabric and mottled batiks.  I have the 18 duplicates ready to sew if I don't make any progress on anything else ...

A slow day........... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday started out productive, a load of laundry and preparing a package for mailing.  The rest of the day was miscellaneous tasks.

I realized I hadn't sewn the flying geese with the dark fabric shown here.  All 5 are from the same fabric but I used 5 different fabrics for the small triangles.  Four more strips sets are sewn for 8 more blocks.  I didn't get any more African fabric strips cut so that has to happen today.  I moved my African fabrics from a big plastic storage box to an open shelf and I can access them ...

16 patch sewing............ from Exuberant Color

The 16 patch stratas were cut into pieces for 28 blocks while I watched the noon news.

I sewed one of each pair.  I wasn't ready to take the other African quilt off the design wall so I just put the blocks up next to it to see how I liked them.  I need to cut more strips so I can make some more blocks.

I had a little sidetrack in the afternoon and cut 2" squares of Kaffe fabric from scraps for some future fun sewing.

We had rain almost all day yesterday and got 1" total.  We ...

A good day............ from Exuberant Color

It was cloudy and cool (high 60s) yesterday morning so I mowed my front yard.  My neighbor mowed his the day before so now mine matches his.

After that I trimmed this quilt.

I found a 1 yard piece of this stripe to do the binding.  You can see by the block below it, that it is in the quilt.  It's probably one of my least favorite of Kaffe's stripes so I will be happy to use 1/2 yard of it.

Last night I didn't want to think hard about anything so I did some mindless ...

More strips and more.............. from Exuberant Color

There are 6 more pairs of strips in this photo (added to yesterday's 12 pairs) and some more of the mottled strips waiting for a partner.  I'm up to 18 pairs, 36 blocks.  There are 11 more mottled strips.  I have decided to make 2 quilts so there will be 2 blocks alike from each pair of strips and the duplicate strips will go in the other quilt.  Here is another African fabric 16 patch quilt top I made in 2020.  I used Kona cotton solids in it and had some blocks of a large print in it ...

Little bits of progress.......... from Exuberant Color

It was mostly a rest and recharge day yesterday.  I started out by sewing a long seam in a backing.  Now I have 2 that need pressing and one will get loaded on the longarm.

I sewed the last little pile of 4" 16 patches, my mindless sewing.

Knitting is always relaxing.  I love the color of this yarn so I got the super size skein.

I cut down the Tree of Heaven for the second time this summer.  I have put week killer on it but it continues to send up shoots.  I pulled a few weeds while I ...

Little 16 patches................ from Exuberant Color

It was a beautiful day yesterday with the humidity dropping quite a bit.  I did errands in the morning and then mid afternoon mowed the grass in the shady backyard and the side yard.  I finished the mowing before dark.

In minutes stolen here and there during the day I sewed some more of the little 4" (finished size) 16 patches and cut the rest from already sewn stratas.  I wonder what I will do today.

Continuing mindless sewing.............. from Exuberant Color

Back in May one of my mindless sewing projects was making stratas from 1.5" strips that were mostly cut about 10 years ago.  This is the batch I completed then.

Since I have a hard time getting started on anything after finishing a big project I turned to more mindless sewing.  There is enough of each combination to make three 16 patches.

I only sewed two of the 16 patch blocks so I have the option instead to make two 24 patch instead of three 16 patches.  Since this is mindless sewing no decision is necessary right now.....the ...

Number 3 finish for July............and more............ from Exuberant Color

Back when I finished this quilt top I called it Impov Strippy so I think that is its name.  It came out 77.5" x 98.5" after quilting and binding.  I have to say I love this one.  I used a brown variegated YLI cotton thread on top and a black/green Superior Bottom Line bobbin thread.  The quilting is organic straight lines.

I had a queen size Hobbs 80/20 batting in a bag from quite a few years ago.  I took it out and put it in the dryer for 10 minutes and then laid it out ...

Prep time................ from Exuberant Color

This is laying on a table in the basement almost ready to load on the longarm.  I cut the two lengths of backing (black with leaves batik) and trimmed the batting to the correct length.  I need to press the backing pieces and sew the seam now.  Here is a full photo of this quilt top.  This one will take up almost the whole length on my longarm frame.

I have completed 12 more pinwheel blocks for the Kaffe Fonthill quilt.  Seeing these together is making me want to make a whole quilt top of pinwheels.

Just when I figure ...

Elephant Cavalcade Tuffet from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

What is a celebration of colors, flowers, wisdom, and prosperity?? It is what Michael Miller’s new line Elephant Cavalcade encapsulates. Twenty unique and eye-catching fabrics complete this whimsical line of fun. It has it all: strips, borders, animals, and great blenders. I can’t decide which fabric is my favorite… Well, no, my favorite is the Royal Elephant, but after that, it is hard to decide. The stripe. Any simple stripe is a fun way to shake things up, and I love them, except the mandala. That is my second favorite and it might be tied for first ...
